Haleakala Ranch History
Henry Perrine Baldwin was the first president of Haleakala Ranch. He was also the co-founder of Alexander & Baldwin. Henry Perrine Baldwin invested substantially in the ranch and Haleakala Crater. The crater was part of the ranch until 1927. In 1927, Haleakala Ranch deeded Haleakala Crater to the Territory of Hawaii. This deal with the Territory of Hawaii was made by Harry and Sam Baldwin, co-owners of the ranch in 1927. They exchanged the crater for land in Kamaole and Kihei. This exchange enabled the establishment of Haleakala National Park. Haleakala Ranch stayed in the Baldwin family until 2000. Willard “Buzz” Stluka took over the ranch in 2000 as the first president from outside the Baldwin family since the ranch's establishment in 1888.
In 2006, the ranch began partnering with Maui Cattle Company. Maui Cattle Company works to keep island livestock in the islands, establish a sustainable ranching industry, and deliver premium products locally. The products are traceable from plate to pasture. Because the products are traceable, customers are ensured that they are always eating fresh and local products. Cattle on the ranch graze in open pastures of island grasses at their own pace. This practice provides flavorful and healthy meats for consumers.
Other than ranching practices, Haleakala Ranch contributes immensely to conservation and preservation efforts in Hawaii. The ranch partners with non-profit organizations such as the Nature Conservancy and East Maui Watershed Partnership. The ranch also has agreements with tourism companies like Skyline Eco-Adventures to help subsidize land stewardship agreements. Haleakala Ranch celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2013.
