It Snowed on Maui!

Topics: ,
Since Haleakalā stands at 10,023 feet above sea level, it can experience extreme weather events like snow when strong weather patterns make their way around Hawaii. Over the past week, there have been variable wind patterns causing a low-pressure system to circle the islands. Heavy rains and thunderstorms occurred Wednesday, 2/14/18. Then, the system hovered around causing similar patterns Sunday, 2/18/18. Due to this storm, flash flood warnings were issued for low lying areas near streams and drainage ditches.Maui-24-7-Facebook-weather-image Weather image from Maui 24/7 Facebook page.
Snow was predicted for Haleakalā Crater at elevations of 9,000 feet and higher, and it happened! We saw between one and two inches on snow at these higher elevations of Haleakalā. It may seem unusual to have a winter weather advisory in Hawaii, but with the islands’ diverse geographical landscapes, anything is possible with strong weather patterns!
