Three Must-Visit Beaches on Kauai

Kauai is home to over 28 beaches. Each is beautiful; these are three must-visit beaches during your stay.

Poipu Beach Park

Poipu Beach is Kauai’s top ranked beach on TripAdvisor and was named America’s best beach by the Travel Channel. It is the most visited beach on the South Shore of Kauai.   PoÊ»ipÅ« Beach Park is located on the southern coast of KauaÊ»i island in Hawaii The beach is made up of three white sand crescents. These crescents form natural ocean wading pools, making them perfect places to swim. This tranquil beach is also a wonderful spot to relax on your beach towel while listening to ocean waves crashing on the shore. Poipu Beach is the perfect destination for families because of the variety of activities available. For younger children or novice swimmers, the shallow waters located in the crescents near the shore are safe swimming areas. Poipu Beach is also an excellent place to try snorkeling, boogie-boarding, or surfing. Lots of surfing opportunities are available for the thrill-seekers on the rocky outcroppings of the crescents. There is a lifeguard on duty at Poipu Beach Park. The facilities in this park include showers, bathrooms, and picnic tables available for visitors; it has everything you need to make a day out of your beach trip.

Hanalei Bay Beaches

Hanalei beaches, located within Hanalei Bay, are the number 1 activity to do in Hanalei according to TripAdvisor. This bay is the largest on Kauai and is bordered by a 3 mile long sandy beach. There are technically three beaches that are connected within the bay; Black Pot Beach Park, Hanalei Pavilion Beach Park, and Wai'oli Beach Park. Hanalei Pier is located at the mouth of the Hanalei River Black Pot Beach is very popular with local residents and campers. It is usually very busy on the weekends so it is best to visit during the week. Drive up access makes it very easy to visit this beach. Many people enjoy picnics here, and equipment for surfing and paddle boarding is available to rent. Hanalei Pavilion Beach Park has the calmest waters in the bay, making it perfect for swimming. It is located in the center of the bay. You can also easily access the pier from this beach. Wai’oli Beach Park is a great place for surfing. A section of this beach is called Pine Trees and usually has the largest waves. Keep in mind that this area in Hanalei Bay does not have a lifeguard on duty. This beach hosts annual surfing contests and has two volleyball courts to enjoy. Anywhere along Hanalei Bay is a perfect place to watch a Hawaiian island sunset. Its beaches form a breathtakingly picturesque scene with mountains in the background behind the ocean.

Polihale State Park Beach

This 7 mile long beach is located in Waimea. Polihale State Park Beach is more remote and difficult to access than other beaches on the island. This means you will have the benefit of a more secluded beach experience. Whether it's breathtaking sunsets, a stunning night sky or simply long walks on the beach, Polihale State Park is a highlight of any trip to Kauai Make sure your vehicle has 4-wheel drive if you plan to visit this beach. Polihale Beach is accessible via a rough 5 mile road through the State Park. But even though this beach can be difficult to get to, it is always worth the drive. The beach is on the western side of the island near Kekaha. It features huge sand dunes. Some of these spectacular dunes are close to 100 feet tall. There is not much natural shade on this beach so bring a canopy or umbrella. Shelling and beachcombing are fun activities to do here along with camping and fishing. Keep in mind that surfing and snorkeling are not the best activities to do here because the beach drops off rapidly into deep waters.

Swimming can be very dangerous in this area because of rough waves and rip currents. If you want to go for a swim, visit Queens Pond for the safest swimming waters. Stargazing is a very popular activity at Polihale State Park Beach. The beach is located  far from any city lights, meaning you will be able to see millions of stars on a clear night. There are many other popular beaches to choose from on Kauai including Anahola Beach and Lydgate Beach. Because there are over 28 beaches to choose from on the island, you are sure to find the perfect beach for you.
