Wipe Out Plastic: Plastic Straw & Water Bottle Alternatives
Our Wipe Out Plastic Initiative exists to help protect our oceans from plastic pollution. The fact is that if plastic is not properly recycled, it usually ends up in our waterways as pollution. Drinking straws and plastic water bottles are very common examples of single-use plastics that are rarely recycled.
Where do plastic straws end up?
If not recycled, plastic straws usually affect marine life in rivers, lakes, and oceans. Think about how all of our waterways are connected. Even storm drains in the middle of a city lead to some sort of water source which eventually ends up connecting to an ocean. In many cases, marine animals confuse plastic straws and other plastic items for food.
What other types of straws can I use instead?
- Bamboo straws are a very sustainable option because of how quickly the plant grows. There are also some bamboo straw options that are so durable that they are actually dishwasher safe.
- Metal or stainless steel straws can be found in straight or bent varieties that you can pick depending on your personal preference. They are a very inexpensive eco-friendly option.
- Glass straws are also dishwasher safe and are available in a wide variety of colors. You can also purchase reinforced glass options so they are more durable for everyday use.
- Paper straws have a bad reputation for becoming soggy pretty quickly in drinks. But there are so many different paper straw options available now that are much sturdier than they used to be. The only downside to this option is that they are still single use straws.
- Edible straws are a cool choice that will add a little extra flavor to your drink of choice whether that be water, milk or soda. Also, you don’t even have to worry about throwing them away somewhere when you are done because they will disappear with your beverage.
