Haleakalā National Park actually has three different visitor centers. The first is located just within the National Park on Crater Road at 7,000 feet above sea level and is called the Haleakalā National Park Headquarters Visitor Center. The second visitor center, called Haleakalā Visitors Center, welcomes guests to the summit area of the park at 9,740 feet above sea level. The third is the coastal Kipahulu Visitor Center.All three visitor centers feature cultural and natural history exhibits. All three facilities also have restrooms available for visitors to use.
The Park Headquarters Visitor Center is open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This is where you pay the park entrance fee and also show proof of your sunrise viewing reservation, if applicable. Once paid, the park entrance fee is valid for three days as long as you keep your receipt. This means that you can come back again to see more of the park during your vacation. You can also rent a cabin and learn more about hiking opportunities while you are at this visitor center.
The Haleakalā Visitor Center is open daily from Sunrise to 12:00 p.m. This center is located very close to the Summit of Haleakalā. This center is where many people watch the Haleakalā sunrise and sunset. This is also where Skyline Hawaii tours stop so visitors can view the sunrise and explore the area during the sunrise and daytime tours.
The Kipahulu Visitor Center is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Kipahulu District is a four hour drive from Kahului on Hana Highway. Please note that there are no roads that go through the park to connect the Summit with the Kipahulu District so it is important to plan ahead. Most people spend about a day exploring this area of the park. Haleakalā National Park is open every day of the year 24 hours per day, even if the visitor centers are closed.
