Merrie Monarch Festival and Lei Day

Topics: , ,
The month of April begins and ends with annual Hawaiian Festivals serving as bookends for the month. The annual Merrie Monarch Festival in Hilo kicks off the month on Easter Sunday. Then, Lei Day welcomes in May four weeks later. The Merrie Monarch Festival is only celebrated on Big Island. So, if you want to take part in the Hula competition activities, that is the place to be at the beginning of the month. This festival runs from April 1, 2018 through April 7, 2018. On the other hand, Lei Day is celebrated on every Hawaiian island on May 1, 2018. May Day is Lei Day in Hawaii and it is such an important celebration because the lei is an expression of welcome, hospitality, and Aloha. This year will be the 91st annual Lei Day festival. On Maui, the biggest Lei Day celebration is the Lei Day Heritage Festival. It is held at Maui’s Bailey House Museum in Wailuku. The festival includes lei making demonstrations, live music, dancing, and a fashion show. If you want to sit back, relax, and enjoy some great local music, another option is to go to the Lei Day concert at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center. This event will be held on April 28th at 7:30 p.m. There are lots of festivities that take place before this annual concert, so arrive early to make the most of this fun event.
