Makawao is a historic town located in Upcountry Maui. It is very well known for its plantation roots and for being a thriving arts community. The charm of Makawao comes from the fact that is it always pretty quiet and calm. Its cowboy culture can be credited to King Kamehameha III and dates back to 1838 when Paniolo came to the island under his command to teach Hawaiians how to manage wild cattle on the island.
